Always Together but now Apart
Vladimir Kush is a Russian born surrealist painter and sculptor. One of his works that has always intrigued me is his painting of a pair of scissors in the shape of a male and female body.
I was trying to show how art might evolve in the presence of the Covid 19 virus and I chose to illustrate ‘social distancing’ using his painting. Initially I created a ‘still’ image by just separating the blades and placing them on opposite sides of the picture but then I had the idea that these elegant blades should separate in a dance. I first tried animating to Scott Jopliin’s ‘The Entertainer’ but this just did not feel right. Then I chanced on Camille Saint-Saëns’ beautiful piece called “The Swan” from ‘The Carnival of the Animals”. The balletic style of this music fitted perfectly with what I was trying to achieve.
