Ohakea is a Royal New Zealand Air Force base on the west coast of North Island, between Palmerston North and Wanganui. They have an air to ground firing range which is in regular use with live ordnance so, if you want to transit this airspace, you must request permission from Air Traffic Control. Our clearance this day was ‘along the beach at not above 500 feet’ and, since we didn’t want to get shot at or bombed for non-compliance …. !
